Housing

Transportation is vital factor relateed to affordable accessible housing.

Low income persons can afford homes in rural areas but without transportation to work they cannot live there.

The cost of transportation to rural areas is HIGH.

Has anyone solved this problem.

  1. some municipalities are committed to affordable housing and have, over a very long period of time, used tax incentives (for builders), housing subsidies (such as Sec. 8) and other techniques as part of their policy to make housing more affordable. Some of these cities have also combined this effort with transit-oriented development. For example, Washington, DC's rail system is 30 years old and today there are several parcels of land that are only now being developed for housing retail, etc. Portland, OR is another example of coordinating transit oriented development and housing policies.

  3. I support Lisa Tucker's recommendation for "Ride or Relocate." An NCST Steering Committee Member (CTAA Member too), Santo Grande, Delmarva Community Services/Delmarva Community Transportation, is also a good resource. His organization provides housing as well as transportation so he understands issue from housing and transportation perspective. Email: santo@dcsdct.org.
